Universal Says Hello To a Remake of ‘Scarfacem’

22 09 2011

Twice before Hollywood has told tales of scandalous men achieving vast riches by selling illegal substances in movies named Scarface. The first time was in 1932, and the substance was prohibition era booze. The second time was in 1983, and the substance was cocaine. I remember watching the 1932 Scarface in a film class way back in the days when I was a lowly university student and liking it quite a bit. I’ve always thought that the 1983 version was pretty dated and indulgent though. Even with its cult status among rappers and people who like to watch Entourage.

So how do I feel about THR’s news that Universal is looking to produce yet another version ofScarface, this one set in modern times? I guess I’m pretty indifferent about it. The story of a tragic figure experiencing a rise and fall in the crime world is one that has been told a thousand times already, and it will be told a thousand times again, so what’s the big deal if they want to sell another one by calling it Scarface?

I know that there’s a very vocal group of people out there who get mad every time a remake is announced though. Whether it’s because they feel like a new version somehow sullies the old film that they love, or they just wish that Hollywood would focus more on creating original scripts rather than rehashing old ideas; some people just hate to hear about another remake.

Because of this I contacted the producer of this third version of Scarface, Marc Shmuger, and asked him to say a few words about why another one is necessary. When I asked for a quote, he said, “What you lookin’ at? You’re all a bunch of fucking assholes. You know why? You don’t have the guts to be what you wanna be. You need remakes. You need remakes so you can point your fucking fingers at people like me and say, ‘That’s the bad guy.’ So… what’s that make you? Good? You’re not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don’t have that problem. Me, I always tell the truth; even when I remake classic films. So say good night to the bad guy! Come on. The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you. Come on. Make way for the bad guy. There’s a bad guy comin’ through! Better get outta his way!“

Okay, that was a lie. I didn’t contact anybody. I just wanted to make Shmuger look like a jerk for coming up with a boring idea for a movie. Another remake: woo-hoo. At least they haven’t gotten toBack to the Future yet.
