Mayweather-Pacquiao: Scores to be settled on May 5, 2012

2 12 2011

By Babatis Banda: With each passing day we keep our fingers crossed, that nothing negative pops up to prevent the possibility of the biggestboxing event in history from happening. So far, all the news is encouraging, with both Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. indicating that it may finally happen.

I was particularly happy with the fact that Manny Pacquiao, this time around seemed to be voicing his intent to fight Floyd Mayweather junior personally, rather than leave it to his team to decide. Funny, enough there are some sections of supporters that seem worried, or is it apprehensive, that this fight is coming close to happening. Few still call Mayweather the coward and that there will be a reason soon that will prevent the fight from happening.

All boxing lovers are keenly watching and waiting, and optimism is what has kept them hopeful this far. There are serious scores to be settled, and we have continued to argue as to who has the better equipment to do the job. Scores to be settled are in two ways, the first and most important, the two boxers themselves. The second, though less important but sufficiently gratifying, is the fans for the two boxers.

Manny Pacquiao finally will have a chance to punish Floyd Mayweather junior for insinuating that he could be on performance enhancing drugs, that he is basically a B+ fighter or is it C+, a fighter who has had his way well paved by Arum and Roach by cleverly picking opponents and selling the Manny brand aggressively.

On the other side, Mayweather has a chance to prove that all along, he has been correct, that he is the best P4P fighter of this era. He has the chance to punish and embarrass the Pacman and to relegate him to the ordinary fighter he thinks he is. Mayweather has the chance to punish Pacquiao for stealing his podium and for challenging him as the best there is today. Mayweather junior is likely to exhibit his best on this day just to put the icing on the cake of his career.

I for one am waiting to settle my own scores, to emphasize what I have always said about the two boxers and how right I always have been. I am hoping that the boxing sites will still be abuzz with comments from both sides after the fight, and I am praying this grudge match will be settled without any controversy. I believe that we have only reached this level of debate about the two boxers primarily because this fight has taken longer to happen than it should have.

My worry though, is not that there will not be a comprehensive winner, but that this match will prove to be one sided. This match has been over-hyped and people are seeing unnecessary visions. There is only one clear vision come May 5, 2012 and all the scores will be settled on both fronts.
