Memorial Day Weekend 2013 is over

29 05 2013

Well, Memorial Day Weekend 2013 is over and Miami Beach residents can stop complaining about the influx of beach-goers and go back to normalcy. And it seems that the police-state type of tactics that the Miami Beach Police Department used the past few years has sent the message out as there were definitely less people on the beach for the festivities this year. It was much harder to get to the beach and thus, less locals on the beach as well.

Other than the hotel industry (which experienced a 70-80% occupancy rate) and the nightlife industry, things were hard for a lot of local beach businesses that decided to stay open. Tons of restaurants and businesses also experienced a loss of revenue and some even had NO customers for extended periods of time throughout the weekend. So with that said, many businesses are considering closing up shop next year to avoid losing money in operational costs to stay open during the holiday weekend.

This year’s totals for arrests between Thursday and today ended up at 414, while last year was at 373. However, most of them were minor offenses and actual calls to 911 were down significantly compared to last year.

Trinidad James has been the talk of the music industry since his hit, “All Gold Everything,” arrived months ago. The Atlanta rapper has chosen to sign with Def Jam Recordings, the label’s president, Joie Manda, tells Billboard exclusively.

“Def Jam, thank you for believing,” says Trinidad James.

“We’re excited to welcome a young talent like Trinidad James to the Def Jam family,” Joie Manda says. “Def Jam prides itself as both a cornerstone of hip-hop’s rich tradition, and as a vital, forward-thinking label dedicated to breaking and nurturing emerging artists. Trinidad James represents the cutting-edge of what’s happening in the culture today. We are thrilled to have him at the label, and look forward to growing his already massive buzz.”

There was much speculation which record label James would sign to, especially after notable record executives were spotted at his NYC show in Dec. 4. Label executives including Def Jam’s Joie Manda, Shawn Pecas, Chris Atlas, and Barry Weiss and Atlantic Records’ Mike Keyser were amongst those in attendance.

cuban bann

It seems not everyone enjoys Reggaeton music. The Castro administration has turned up its nose at the music genre labeling it as vulgar, sexually explicit and banal. ”Neither vulgarity or mediocrity may dent the richness of Cuban music,” Cuban Institute of Music president Orlando Vistel Columbié told the state-owned press. This not only includes Reggaeton, but the party genre all together. Ouch!

Raul Castro is your grumpy old neighbor who’s always yelling at you to “turn that crap down.”

The Castro administration has banned “vulgar and banal” music with a direct eye towards reggaeton.

“Neither vulgarity or mediocrity may dent the richness of Cuban music,” Cuban Institute of Music president Orlando Vistel Columbié told the state-owned press.

Vistel in particularly takes issue with the “aggressive, sexually explicit, obscene” reggaeton lyrics that portray Cuban women as “grotesque sexual objects.”

Though, Vistel clarified that he’s not only concerned with reggaeton, but considers the party genre a particular menace.
